Why do outdoor VFD installations still need a cabinet? This article breaks down how the AT24 UB HP's IP55 sealed design removes the cabinet, filters, and extra cable runs, and what that means for installation cost and maintenance.

The usual way to put a drive outdoors is to not put it outdoors at all: keep it IP20, build or buy a weatherproof cabinet, run motor cables out to it, add drainage, add ventilation or cooling for the cabinet itself, and hope the door seal holds up over the years. Every one of those items has a cost, a lead time, and a maintenance line of its own - and the drive inside still isn't actually built for the environment it's protecting itself from.
AT24 UB HP skips that whole chain. The drive itself is IP55-rated, sealed, and designed to sit in a dusty plant, a humid compressor room, or directly outdoors - no external cabinet, no extra cable run, nothing extra to drain.
A dedicated cooling channel keeps outside air away from the electronics entirely - cooling airflow moves through an isolated path around the power components, while the control electronics stay sealed inside an IP55 enclosure.

Table 1. AT24 UB HP - key specifications.
Every part of the enclosure is designed for continuous outdoor or harsh-indoor exposure, not just rated for it on a datasheet:

Figure 1. AT24 UB HP operates from -10°C to +50°C - full rated output up to +40°C, with derating above that.
The real saving isn't the enclosure itself - it's everything the enclosure lets you skip.

Table 2. Items a typical outdoor VFD installation requires vs. what AT24 UB HP eliminates.
For 280–400 kW models, a purpose-built mounting base is included as standard, and these units are floor-standing. For 132–250 kW units the base is available as an optional accessory. Models up to 245 kW can be wall-mounted directly.
AT24 UB HP is built for pumps, HVAC systems, exhaust and filtration units, compressors, conveyors, crushers, and mixers - equipment that's routinely installed in dusty plants, open-air sites, compressor rooms, and other locations where an IP20 drive would need a cabinet just to survive.
Every control action - configuration, monitoring, diagnostics - is available without opening the cabinet. Connect over Wi-Fi through the built-in EasyDrive Web interface (typical connection time under 10 seconds) and use guided, step-by-step setup wizards from a phone, tablet, or laptop. The classic physical front panel remains available for on-site adjustments, secured behind a quick-release lock, and - if you'd rather view it from a separate room - the control panel can be relocated up to 10 meters away. Have a pump, fan, or compressor currently sitting in an outdoor cabinet? Send us the motor size and site conditions - we'll tell you whether AT24 UB HP lets you remove the cabinet entirely.
